How to Delete Your X (Twitter) Account in 2026
What you need to know first
X has no one-step delete. You deactivate, and if you don't log in for 30 days the account is permanently deleted. Any login during 30 days reactivates it.
Step-by-step: delete your data from X (Twitter)
- Step 1: Log in at x.com
- Step 2: Click More > Settings and privacy > Your account
- Step 3: Click Deactivate your account
- Step 4: Read the info and click Deactivate
- Step 5: Enter password and confirm
- Step 6: Do not log in for 30 days
On mobile
- Tap profile photo > Settings and privacy > Your account
- Tap Deactivate your account
- Confirm with password
- Avoid logging in for 30 days
Opt out of AI training
See opt-out-grok-x for the separate Grok AI-training toggle
Separate data request
Download an archive of your data (Settings > Your account > Download an archive) — request before deactivating
Key gotchas
- Revoke third-party app access first — those apps can auto-reactivate the account
- DMs you sent are deleted only after the 30-day window ends
- Username becomes available to others after deletion
- Email is locked from reuse for 30 days
What this doesn't cover
Deleting your X account won't delete information from search engines, and third parties that scraped your posts keep their copies.
Posts archived by brokers, scrapers, and the Wayback Machine survive deletion; broker-level removal shrinks that footprint.
