How to Delete or Deactivate Your Apple Account in 2026
What you need to know first
Deactivation temporarily suspends the account and all data (reversible by contacting Apple with your access code); deletion is permanent and irreversible.
Step-by-step: delete your data from Apple ID (Apple Account)
- Step 1: Go to privacy.apple.com in a browser (not available on iPhone)
- Step 2: Sign in and complete two-factor authentication
- Step 3: Under Delete your account, click Request to delete your account
- Step 4: Select a reason and click Continue
- Step 5: Review checklist and terms, check the box, click Continue
- Step 6: Choose how to receive status updates
- Step 7: Save the unique access code, enter it, and submit
Separate data request
Apple Data and Privacy page (privacy.apple.com) > Get a copy of your data; Deactivate (reversible) option
Key gotchas
- Clear any Apple Pay Later / outstanding balances first or you can't delete
- Spend store credit and request refunds first (funds lost)
- Save the access code — required to check status or cancel
- iPhone Upgrade Program payments continue
- Sign out of all devices first
What this doesn't cover
Deletion removes Apple-held data but doesn't reach brokers; DRM-free purchases keep working but iCloud-stored DRM content becomes inaccessible.
Apple keeps little, but your name/email/phone still circulate among brokers independently of Apple.
